About Omega Boys Club
Omega Alumni
The Omega Boys Club Alumni are exemplifying the Club's motto of "the more you know, the more you owe." Formed in the fall of 2003, spearheaded by the efforts of alums Shervon Hunter, Zachary Donald, Omar Butler, Corey Monroe and Venus Winston, the Omega Alumni are an integral part of the Club's continuing success. Alumni assist in providing education, outreach and counseling in schools, community forums and conferences, and juvenile detention and adult prison facilities. They keep track of college graduates and others served by the Club, and help with fundraising and community events to keep the Omega family together. They give back by mentoring newer Omega Club members and contributing financially to sustain the long term life and health of the Club.
The Omega Alumni have several specific programs that they put on throughout the year. These are:
- The annual remembrance birthday celebration in May of Club Elder "Coach" Wilbur Jiggetts. (Coach Jiggetts passed away in 2003)
- The annual Omega Alumni Reunion Barbeque the first Saturday in August
- The annual Kwanzaa program on the last Tuesday in December
The Alumni also give a Coach of Life Award each year to outstanding volunteers who exemplify the life of Coach Jiggetts.
Perhaps most impressive of all is the Alumni's Children of Omega program, through which the Alumni provide activities for children of alums through such activities as skating parties and sleepovers. Currently the alumni are planning a Children of Omega Institute, which will teach the children of Omega Alumni the Omega violence prevention methodology. Future plans include developing a college survival kit for new Omega collegians and putting on an Alumni Night of Fun, while continuing their efforts to reach out to other Omega alumni to make annual financial contributions to the Club.
The Omega Alumni meet the first and second Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm at the Omega Boys Club. For more information on the Omega Alumni and its programs, contact Erica Lewis Program Assistant at 415-826-0284 or via email at edl@street-soldiers.org.
The more you know, the more you owe.
