Program Description
The Omega Leadership Academy offers skill development in
a format that engages all types of youth. The Class helps club members
develop the verbal, research and writing skills and the discipline
needed
to succeed in a college environment and the world of work. It also
supports students in developing new peer norms that value academic
achievement. Some students enter the program with the specific goal
of college entrance. For others whose educational goals are unclear,
the idea of preparing for college evolves as intellectual curiosity
blossoms.
The curriculum has been developed over several years,
and is still being refined. It is based on the concept of studying
violence as a public health issue. Assignments are drawn from a
variety of sources and disciplines, including, but not limited to
literature and historical cross-cultural experiences, autobiographical
materials, current events and contemporary interpersonal issues.
Assignments engage students in critical thinking about a range of
violence-related issues, encouraging them to reflect on their own
life and reinforce the Club's messages about how to move out of
the culture of violence.
The Club provides academic counseling and makes referrals to help
students plan for, apply and select the college that best meets
their needs. Staff meet one-on one with each student to discuss
their academic strengths, interests and possible college choices.
The
great majority of Omega Club members need financial assistance to
attend college. The Club requires all students to seek and secure
as much financial aid as is possible based on need eligibility and
we meet with family to discuss what the family can contribute as
well. Students then formally apply for assistance through our Scholarship
Program. Eligible collegians receive scholarships.
Once at college, out-of-the area students receive long distance
tutoring and counseling. Local students also receive support and
benefit from phone and face to face meetings for help and guidance.
For those students who need to complete a GED certificate before
either college or work, the Club assists them with program placement,
support and guidance while enrolled, and a stipend based on financial need.
The Omega Leadership Academy, which to date has produced 163 college
graduates, is under the directorship of Ms. Deborah Estell.
