The Omega Training Institute
Purpose:
The purpose of The Omega Training Institute is to teach, train and instruct individuals in violence prevention/conflict reduction skills based on the model (treating violence as a public health issue) developed by the Omega Boys Club. Participants are educated a) to identify the risk factors associated with violent behavior, b) to familiarize
themselves with methods of dealing with emotional residue and c) to articulate Omega's rules for living.
The Omega Training Institute was launched in 1996 in response to a national request for information on activities of the Omega Boys Club. The Institute's purpose is to provide individuals with education and training in violence prevention/conflict reduction and intervention.
Who Should Attend:
The Omega Training Institute is offered once a year for persons interested in combating violence in their communities. Special consideration is given to those in direct service to youth: i.e. school personnel (administrators, guidance counselors, teachers and support staff); directors and staff of community based agencies; public servants
(law enforcement and juvenile justice systems personnel); and social service care providers. All workshops are held in San Francisco.
Selection Process:
Participants for the workshops are selected from a pool of individuals making application and/or nominated by local community agencies. An advisory committee screens the applicants and nominees. Individuals selected for participation in the workshops are provided, in advance,
with an outline of workshop activities, pre-arrival assignments and related information regarding logistics (travel, housing, meals, etc.)
All participants are expected to attend the entire 3-day training. It is a requirement for all participants to have read the book, Street Soldier, by Dr. Joseph E. Marshall, Jr., prior to attending the workshop.
Fee:
Individuals selected for the workshops will assume responsibility for their own travel expenses, hotel accommodations, meals that are not sponsored by The Training Institute, and incidentals. The registration fee is $750.00. A deposit of $250.00 must be submitted with the application. For more information or to request an application, please contact the Omega Boys Club.
*If the applicant is accepted the deposit will be applied to the registration fee. If the applicant is not accepted the deposit will be returned. Scholarships up to $250 are available based upon need.
